Important Update Regarding Recent DHS Final Rule
July 17, 2026
Dear Seawolves,
On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a final rule titled Establishing a Fixed Time Period of Admission and an Extension of Stay Procedure for Nonimmigrant Academic Students, Exchange Visitors, and Representatives of Foreign Information Media.
We understand that news of this rule may raise questions or concerns. Please know that Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) is actively reviewing the final rule to determine how it may affect our F-1 and J-1 students and scholars. We are working closely with campus partners and immigration experts to fully understand the changes and their impact on our community.
At this time, no immediate action is required. We anticipate publishing a detailed overview on our website within the next week that will explain the changes, who may be affected, and any actions that may be necessary.
In the meantime, please:
- Continue maintaining your F-1 or J-1 status as usual.
- Monitor your Stony Brook email and the VIS website for official updates.
We recognize that periods of regulatory change can create uncertainty. Please remember that you are not navigating these changes alone. Our team is committed to keeping you informed, providing clear guidance, and supporting you throughout this process.
Thank you for your patience as we carefully review the new requirements. We will share additional information as soon as it becomes available.
Warm regards,
Visa and Immigration Services
Stony Brook University
